This page is an extended work in progress - it is hoped to improve upon the old "paint" index page. I like its look better than the old paint page, but this one is image intensive.
A variety of series were updated in January 2008, including the addition of the 46200 gondola series, photos of the four new 4500 series cabooses, a photo of one of the PRZ trailers, and the assigned numbers to the cars destined for the 21000 series and the 81100 series. Although from January 2008, these are the most recent work completed on the modeled Pennrail roster, although the 837 (SD45) has since debuted in primer on PWMRC rails, and previously painted & decaled #89110 was assembled in November 2013 and sports an updated photo. A fresh Front-Range car is on hand to become 88302, identical to 88301.
As of August 2, 2009, there are 78 individual cars represented on this page. (2 cars added but one of which had already been accounted for in the prior 7-24-08 count of 77) All but a couple are in the Bedford Division project, the rest are at PSMRRC, mostly on static display in 10 Pinchot. On top of that, cars are in hand for 5 more 60' boxcars, 7 more 100T hoppers, 4 more gondolas and an undetermined number of 25400 series boxcars, though the latter are set aside for eventual disposal to others. Consulting the access database, there are cars on hand for the 20300 class car, the 25800 class car and one other, at least by numbers assigned. This does not take into account any unassigned numbers, nor does it take into account the UP&E, SC&W and PRLX cars from PSMRRC days that are still in the database.
Photos were observed in November 2013 of additional items in primer - shells of a GP38-2 (#239), a GP40-2 (not ID'd), a SW1500 (#177), a GP40 (not ID'd), and an Accurail 3400 series boxcar (#20300), and an Athearn bay-window caboose. These have been in primer since at least 2008. The #177 shell was partially painted as to ends and cab sides.

Also note the right side images don't appear correctly in IE6 or IE7 or IE8, but are fine in firefox. IE displays them full size, instead of the indicated percentage scaling. Testing of the file in IE8 on 08/02/2009 shows the columns as intended only appear correctly when the images are all commented out. With text still showing for that column, it appears correctly. I think the problem is temporarily solved by specifying the right column images as width 240 instead of the 100% of the cell width that Firefox had been properly recognizing.
The Pennrail 20300-20349 series of boxcars are 40' in length and are of XM type. They were bought secondhand by Pennrail at the outset, and most have been reassigned to MOW service. The class car of 20300 is the number assigned in the database for a car from this class using an Accurail 40' car.
|
The Pennrail 21000-21099 series of boxcars are 60' in length and are of XF type. They were manufacturered by Greenville. The modeled set started as data-only cars made by Con-Cor.
| 7 of these cars are in the modeled roster, with the other five numbers assigned being 21004, 21033, 21055, 21070 and 21089. |
The Pennrail 25000-25099 series of boxcars are primarily XML 50' welded cars from the late 1960s.

The Pennrail 25100-25149 series of boxcars are primarily XML 50' double-door welded cars from the late 1960s.
| Quick notes on the series... Originally some cars in this series were assigned 25000 series numbers before the car type was indentified. |
The Pennrail 25400-25499 series of exterior post 5277 cu. ft. boxcars were originally built April 1974. (The Roundhouse run of the late 1980s is very similar to this car, but the number series of those has not been determined. 3 of them remain in the PSMRRC display case, but the sole one in my possession had lettering in such bad shape that I restenciled it SC&W 36198). The bulk of the series are represented by a custom run done by Accurail in late 2006, using their 5600 exterior post car as a base. 60 cars were commissioned, of which about 30-35 are expected to remain in the actual roster. To date, 31 cars have been renumbered, making 32 when added to the default number car. As of 1-16-08, all 32 are assembled, although 23 require additional weight. (These cars were weighted in June and July 2009) The 2006 Accurail Run default number is 25416, with the renumber decal range of 25420-25479. Cars 25429 and 25470 were last seen on the rails of the Nickel City Line, somewhere east of the Emporium interchange.

The Pennrail 25800-25899 series of 50' boxcars... actuals are 25800 and 25817, both Details West 50' double-plug cars.
|
The Pennrail 46200-46299 series mill gondolas started as basic con-cor data-only in black.
| Six are on hand, assigned numbers 46200, 46205, 46227, 46235, 46259 and 46299. Only 46200 and 46259 have been stenciled to date. |
The Pennrail 65100-65149 series flat cars are general service, 50' cars. Several have been removed from revenue service and now find life as captive MOW flats.
|
The Pennrail 65700-65799 series flat cars.
|
The Pennrail 81000-81299 series hoppers were made by Greenville, and were 100T, 14 panel type. They are used in coal service.
|
Additional numbers assigned but not yet stenciled: 81104, 81105, 81109, 81132, 81160, 81183, 81193.
Coal loads in the 81100s photos to the left are by Wilson Harrell. He's based out of the Tidewater area of Virginia, and travels to shows around the area, including as far as Timonium, MD. |
The Pennrail 81700-81899 series hoppers are 70T open hoppers. Presumably these are modeled with a Stewart based 3-bay 70T car, one is on hand but it has not yet been begun, nor assigned a specific number from the series. A suggested number observed was 81767 from some notes from 2005 discovered in 2013.
|
The Pennrail 87100-87199 and 87400-87699 series Covered Hoppers were made by Pullman Standard. As of early 2014, a few additional car numbers have been assigned: PR 87461, NC 87446, and NC 87499. It is unclear whether the Nittany Central cars will sport the Pennrail logo as seen in the 88300 series cars.
|
The Pennrail 88200-88299 series Covered Hoppers were made by ACF starting in December 1980.
|
The Pennrail 88300-88349 series Covered Hoppers were made by ACF starting in July 1980. The series is represented (on the whole) by Accurail's 2000 series model, using their 2096 data only car as a base, except as otherwise noted below. (Recently, as of early 2014, an additional Front Range car and two McKean cars have been assigned 88302, 88303 and 88307, though these could end up Nittany Central, State College & Western or University Park and Eastern depending on the whim at painting)
|
|
The Pennrail 89100-89149 series Covered Hoppers were made by ACF starting in July 1980, but unlike the 88300 series, these were two bay meant for cement service.
|
The Pennrail 167800-167899 series numbers were assigned to 45' Highway trailers, with marks PRZ. At least one trailer is known to exist from PSMRRC days, appearing in slides from 1997, and reappearing in a John Balogh youtube video (0:54 mark) from the Club's Fall 2013 open house.

PENNRAIL non-revenue Roster
| (It should be noted that the 4565 and 4567 were assigned to UP&E Bay-windows in actual service on PSMRRC #4, which may or may not survive*. 4566 was also UP&E, designed as a "Safety Green" scheme but not completed during my time at PSMRRC, and came home with me. *4565 shown on Club Facebook page from Sunday, December 8, 2013 open house, so it still exists) |
